Although Galle’s history dates back to ancient seafarers and traders, its most remarkable development began during the Portuguese period in the 16th century. Later, the Dutch took control in 1640, transforming Galle into a major fortified port city. The Galle Fort, built by the Dutch, became the heart of trade and governance in southern Sri Lanka, blending European architecture with South Asian traditions. This period marked a golden era of cultural and commercial exchange, leaving behind churches, ramparts, and warehouses that still stand today. After the British took over in 1796, Galle continued to flourish as a key maritime hub until modern ports emerged. Today, its well-preserved fort and colonial charm remain a living testament to centuries of history and heritage.
